#21 New England Net and Twine Ike Walton 8'6" 3/1 4/5 weight.
This rod came into my possession with all the guides missing and most of the silk intermediate wraps either missing or loose.
I refurbished the rod to fish.
The ferrules are all original and fit well the reel seat and cork are original as well.
The tip has a slight set the rod casts a 5 weight beautifully.
The rod is wrapped in Nylon size A green and black Jaspers tipped in yellow.
The wraps received 3 coats of color preserver and 3 coats of Pemagloss.
The blank and wraps received 2 coat of marine man of war varnish by dip method.
The rod will not win any contests for being original but it casts beautifully and is ready to fish.
Offered at $375.00 Reduced $350.oo imageimage

#22 Bristol Edwards F-12 9'3/2 5 weight all original includes original tube and sock.
This rod is just as I purchased it several years ago.
The second tip has what appears to be a repair wrap please see photo.
I was told by the old timer I purchased the rod from that the rod had no issues that the wraps were added by him to stiffen the tip as he thought the rod was too slow and he wanted to alter the action.
I have cast the rod with both tips and it is a little faster with the over wrapped tip.
The finish would benefit from a polishing I will leave that to the new owner.
All sections are full length the reel seat has a cracked insert pleas see photo.
This is a nice rod in good overall condition.
Offered at $350.00.imageimageimageimageimage
#23 Sewell Dunton and Sons Anglers Choice Standard 8'6" 3/2 6 weight.
This rod is all original and comes with the original tube and bag.
Tube label is 90% intact.
The rod has one short tip , I like the rod best with a 5 weight and admittedly have fished it on several occasions on the Farmington River here in Connecticut with the short tip the rod is a pleasure to fish.
Offered at $300.00 Reduced $275.00

OLD YANKEE ROD SMITHS PAGE

Welcome to my Page
Allow me to introduce myself and give you a little background.
I am Andrew W Manchester Jr aka "The Old Yankee Rod Smith" I am an avid Fly Fisherman,Rod Maker and Environmentalist.
An Active member of The Salmon River Anglers Association, President /Events Chairman/Mentoring Program Chairman.Active Member of Trout Unlimited, The Housatonic Fly Fisherman's Association ,The Connecticut Fly Fisherman's Association and the Custom Rod Builders Guild.
Fly Fishing since about age 6 I started tying my own flies at age 10 and building my own fly rods at age 12. Full time custom rod maker I work with Bamboo,Fiberglass and Graphite with 40 years at the bench.
I am also very involved with repair work and restorations ,I specialize in fiberglass and bamboo rod repairs and restorations.
Every year I do a limited edition series of rods Last year it was my Sceptre series of 20 ea 7' 2 piece
fiberglass rods, I also collect vintage reels, fishing prints and lures.
Feel free to contact me for help with your needs.
I have been a member here on Fiberglass Fly Rodders Since the beginning.
When we started this site there were very few of us true fiberglass enthusiasts it has been very interesting to say the least to watch the fiberglass re-evolution as I call it .
I guess that means we are not such odd balls now.
It seems every rod maker on the planet has wanted in on our passion with so many new faces claiming to be lovers of fiberglass.
The material is really the best material for fly rods in my opinion and I truly love the sweet almost hypnotic feel of a well designed and made fiberglass fly rod in my hands.
I am a full time rod maker and engineer by profession and work with all materials ,I hold a deep passion for Bamboo rods as well but admittedly am a bit of a snob when it comes to bamboo and only seek the finest obtainable for my personal use.
My work with Graphite is mostly by request and special order although I do like some of the slower Graphite blanks they are far and few between though .
Again these are my personal preferences and observances.
I have watched this site evolve and grow with some level of apprehension as the site has grown it has lost many of the original members and the closeness we once shared.
I guess this is what you call progress ??
It's hard to keep track of all the new people and I actually find myself only reading the post of the people I remember from the beginning.
Things have gotten very redundant very few truly new topics and many times the topic at hand has already be addressed sometimes several times if you look back to the old posts you will see what I am talking about.
I will continue to do my best to help my fellow fiberglass fly rodder and if you have a question feel free to shoot me a message I will be only glad to help that hasn't changed.
I have changed my profile or should I say started a new one after over 1000 posts as Andymanyankee I decided to make some changes as well and a new user name seemed to be appropriate.

Sceptre Bushwhacker Special. #24
This is a unique little rod crafted for necessity from 2 9' Sceptre rod blanks.
The rod features 2 butt sections for an all around small stream rod.
Butt section A configuration makes the rod a 5'6" 2.6 oz rod that handles a 5 weight great for tight streams.
Butt section B configuration makes the rod a 6'6" 3.0 oz rod that is also a 5 weight just a little more length for small streams with a little more open space.
The neat thing about this rod is you can carry the second section with you on the stream and switch sections without relining the rod you simply change sections and remount the reel.

aluminum brown and gold down lock reel seat, modified well grips, custom rod sock,PVC tube.

Phillipson 8' 2/1 # 280 #26
Very early example of the fine Craftsmanship of Bill Phillipson.
This rod is in very good partially restored condition.
When I received the rod the finish was very dull and the grip was filthy.
I cleaned up the rod and polished the ferrules that now pop like a cork, cleaned up the grip and lightly sanded it,cleaned and lightly sanded the blank and added 2 thinned coats of varnish to the blank and wraps by dip method.
It is difficult for me to part with this rod as I truly love the way it handles a 6 weight line.
I can't keep them all and this rod should really be fished and not sit around in a tube.
The rod came to me with no bag or tube.
I will ship the rod in a replacement bag and PVC tube.
Offered at $125.00

Rod Making Help Questions Answered Ask An Expert !

  1. WHY SPINE YOUR BLANKS

    07/31/09 16:37:57 | 4 Comments

This is a Collection of comments I have made on the importance of Spine.
Others may disagree about spine but that in my opinion may be because they are close minded and don't fully understand the importance and or have never really taken the time to experiment with spine to know first hand how important it really is.

I hope this helps you in your future projects.

Old Yankee Rod Smiths Ongoing Inovations

Hello
As many of you know I am always pushing the envelope trying to create better rods rods that you will not find elsewhere.
So I have decide to share some projects here.
My work is often copied but never duplicated some say my innovations are gimmicks to that I say they just lack the initiative to develop their own working innovations and are unwilling to think out side the parameters others have set for them.

The first rod is a Duel Material Rod that employs a Fiberglass butt section approximately 41" in length with a butt diameter of .485" E glass Forecast SPG 780 the Tip Section is Graphite from a 5' Forecast SP 600 Blank with a butt section diameter of .270 " and a tip diameter of 4.0.the trimmed length is approximately 55"
The rods finished length is 8'1" + or -

The rod employs my latest Infused Flex Enhancement Process in where I inject urethane foam into the rod blank and through my process the foam is cured to increase's dampening and help the rod during load to hold it's shape to increase accuracy distance and presentation..

Next is the ferrules I choose to use Nickle Silver Plated brass ferrules and insert them internally inside the blank.
The ferrules were first fitted with inserts that were hand made on my lathe to the exact inside taper of the blank a light weight material of extreme flexibly and strength was used the for the inserts.

The ferrule fitting was the most critical part of the project and I had many failed ferrules before I came upon the right material and process to make it work.
In the past I have used balsa wood to some success and for your use it will work fine should you choose to try my process.
I wanted to retain the light weight and add strength so I opted for a new material.

Next was Reel seat and grip selection I decided to keep things as Utility minded as possible and beside this is a prototype for my experimental use only so weight and balance was a strong factor in choosing aluminum over other materials.
The grip is something I had laying around the shop a little long but that's all good as well.

The guide selection was something that I struggled with and I wanted to keep both the guides and the finish as light as possible so I opted for a 2 ceramic inserted lightweight size 8 & 6 stripping guides with the feet filed down and 7 oversize single foot guides with the feet trimmed as well and a large loop thin wire tip top for good measure. The thread is size A Nylon Rice #2966 the finish I used is Dura Gloss L.S. Supreme heated to obtain a thin consistency to get as thin and lightweight a finish as possiable while retaining it's strength.
No color preserver was used !

The finished rod is a delight to cast and it handles a 3 or 4 weight line with the ultimate in fineness.
The rod loads quickly and will punch out a 40' cast with a single false cast.
When you start really loading it the rod becomes more parabolic in nature and will toss a very long fine leader and flawlessly accurate presentations time after time.
I have caught several pan fish here on the pond and recently took it to the river to try on some weary trout.
The rod performed better than I anticipated and I was able to fool some very selective Northeast trout.
Please take a look and check out this little gem pictured below.

imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage Now for the second rod this rod is made from 2 separate E glass blanks I used a more supple butt section from one blank and paired it with a stiffer tip from another blank.
I apologize for the vagueness of that description but I worked many hours coming up with this combination and with a little educated mixing and matching you can be well on your way to finding the sweet spot.
They are both Forecast E Glass blanks off the self.

With this project I did the same as above in terms of my Infused Flex Enhancement process and my Ferrules are the same type the only difference is these ferrules have the balsa wood inserts for reinforcement .
Notice the double wrapped ferrules and longer wraps I needed to assure this ferrule would stand up to the abuses a stream.
Again this is why this rod is a prototype you learn something from every prototype you make.

This rod is Fitted with a Pac Bay Cocabola inserted cap and ring reel seat a modified grip, size 6 carbide stripping guide and 6 size 1 English snake guides.the rod is wrapped in size A Gudebrod Nylon color # 602 tipped and accent wraps are size A Rice # 2966.
The finish on this rod is as follows 3 coats of color preserver then as with the rod above I used Dura Gloss L.S. Supreme heated to obtain a thin consistency to get as thin and lightweight a finish as possible while retaining it's strength.
As you can see the finish technique works well if I do say so myself.
This is also the process I teach in my rod building classes very easy to follow with good quality results that stand up.

This is one really neat rod my father cast it last week and he thought it was the best rod I have made with the Forecast E Glass blanks It is very powerful and casts a 5 weight very precisely with spot on leader turnovers.

Andy, While perusing the site in hopes of finding a nice fiberglass rod that I might use for midwest lake largemouth, I came across your comments about spine. As a hobbiest fisherman who learned how to topwater for bass back in the late early 1950s with my grandfather and more recently an avid golfer/clubmaker I can attest to your claims of spine finding and the immediate and positive results. I have "spined" many a golf shaft. M.O.I.ed "moment of enertia" and " frequency matched" primarily graphite shafts from various manufacturers. They all have spines, some more prominant than others, but they all should be checked and properly aligned for. I would be curious to know the types of tools that you use in your process. Appreciate your knowledge.....Jerry Montgomery St Peters Mo. hambone63376@yahoo.com
